Dhanur Yaga of Kamsa
The Dhanur Yaga of Kamsa is a sacred and symbolic episode from the ancient Bhagavata Purana deeply associated with the divine pastimes of Lord Krishna. This powerful event is often reflected in the cultural and devotional traditions of Kerala Temple festivals where the victory of righteousness over evil is celebrated through storytelling, rituals and devotional performances.
According to the legend, the tyrant king Kamsa organized a grand Dhanur Yaga with the hidden intention of killing Krishna and Balarama. The event was arranged with great royal grandeur attracting citizens, wrestlers and royal dignitaries to the arena. However, the divine arrival of Lord Krishna changed the course of the event. As Krishna entered the ceremonial ground, he encountered the fierce elephant Kuvalayapeeda which was sent to destroy him. Demonstrating extraordinary divine strength, Krishna subdued the elephant and symbolically removed the obstacles placed by evil forces.
Further, Krishna lifted and broke the sacred bow prepared for the ritual signifying the destruction of arrogance, pride and unrighteous power. This act marked a turning point in the story, filling Kamsa with fear and anxiety. The atmosphere of the arena transformed into one of anticipation as the great wrestling event known as Malla Yuddha was about to begin with warriors like Chanura and Mushtika.
In Kerala temples, this episode is remembered through devotional art forms, ritual performances and cultural programs that preserve the spiritual essence of Hindu tradition. It continues to inspire devotees by highlighting the divine strength, righteousness and compassion of Lord Krishna.
