During Tippu Sultan's padayottam, the members of the Padinjare Covilakam escaped to the Travancore where the then Maharaja of Travancore, Karthika Thirunal Rama Varma (popularly known as Dharma Raja) welcomed them and gave Kunnathur Kovilakam in Kollam District for their domicile. They lived there for about 50 years.
When the situation in Calicut became normal and peaceful, the Zamorin rehabilitated his family members to a place in Calicut close to the Valayanadu Devi temple. At that time this area was in the custody of Mangalassery Nair family.
The Nair family gave this plot to the Zamorin for building the kovilakam. At that time this place was a wilderness. Elderly people of the locality believe, from the stories passed on from generations, that there was an ancient temple of Bala Durga which was demolished at the time of the Mysoorian invasion of Malabar. At the time of clearing of the trees for building the kovilakam, the hatchet of one of the labourers touched a stone and blood oozed from it.
Seeing this strange phenomenon, the matter was reported to the Zamorin Raja. At the deva prasna it was revealed that the sila was the idol of Bala Durga. Accordingly a temple was built on the spot and worship began. The sankalpa of the deity is that of the devi of kanyakumari, who is believed to bless children and maidens who desire to achieve excellence in education, music etc.
