The Soorasamhara Mahotsavam or Sooranpada is an annual festival celebrated at the Subrahmanya Swami Temple to commemorate the mythical episode of Lord Subrahmanya ( or Murugan) slaying the Asura kings Tharakasuran and Shoorapathman with the help of his aide Veerabahu. The festival traces its history back to the time of the Zamorins, the former rulers of Kozhikode.

Local people say that a group of people who were brought by the Zamorin from Tamil Nadu for bearing his palanquin were later allowed to make their settlement at Thiruvannur. They were also allowed to install their favourite deity, Murugan on a small platform under a banyan tree, which was later developed into a temple attracting thousands of devotees.

The festival is celebrated in the month of November.

The streets are adorned with festoons and flowers and the temple walls are decorated with drawings of legends.Youngsters make huge Kolams which are mounted on chariots to symbolically enact the ritualistic killing of the Asuras. The Soorasamhara is preceded by several ceremonies on the last day before the mythical recreation after which the festival draws to a close. Women devotees observe a 6-day fast which is broken after the Sooranpada ritual.
