Sree Subramanya Swamy Kshethram is one of the oldest temples in kozhikode district, it has more than 3000 years old history. Lord Subramanya and Goshala Krishnan are main deities of this temple with equal importance.
Thaipooyam is celebrated in the name of Lord Subramanya, Son of Lord Shiva. Since
Subramanya is the main deity, thaipooyam festival is celebrated with greater importance. The name
Thaipooyam is derived by blending two words. Thai is a Tamil month (January-Febuary) and Pooyam is
the star (It is called Poosam in Tamil). There are numerous stories associated with Thaipooyam. But the
most important story is that of Goddess Parvathi, presenting Vel to Muruga to eliminate demon
Tharakasura.

Thaipooyam festival is celebrated in the name of Lord Subramanya, son of Lord Shiva. It is a 7 days spectacular event. The shrine is beautifully decorated. The kavadiyattam which showcases a rich vibrancy of colours is the major attraction. Kavadi is a richly decorated wooden arch carried on shoulders. Kavadi denote burden and the dancers are taking all their burden on their shoulder and dance to appease Lord Subramanya. Other than this several other cultural events like classical dance forms,musical concert, percussion music,drama,kadhaprasangam are also staged. Annadanam is there on all days. On final day ie the Thaipooyam there is a grand procession covering the major part of town accompanied by decorated floats and percussion music which attracts many devotees bearing the kavadis, spinning about to the rhythmic and catchy beats of chenda and cymbals make the onlooker fill with bliss. The temple premises burst with thousands of devotees from far and wide during this time.
