Thalappoli Mahotsavam at Payyanakkal Sree Bhagavati Kavu, Kozhikode is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. Dedicated to the Goddess Bhagavati, the temple comes alive with a series of traditional rituals, cultural performances and devotional ceremonies that attract devotees from all over the region.
The festival is marked by a blend of religious fervor and community participation reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The celebrations begin with sacred rituals such as Ganapathi Homam and Prabhatha Pooja which set the spiritual tone for the festival. One of the main attractions of the festival is the Thalappoli procession, a traditional ritual in which women devotees carry decorated plates filled with lamps, flowers and offerings symbolizing prosperity and devotion. This is accompanied by rhythmic temple percussion creating a mesmerizing atmosphere.
Another highlight is the series of Vellattu performances where deities like Kalabhairavan, Yogibhairavan and Kshethrapalan are taken out in elaborate processions accompanied by intricate rituals, traditional music and theatrical elements. These performances showcase a unique combination of devotion, art and storytelling, keeping the devotees enthralled throughout the day.
The festival also includes Kalasham processions, Melari Pooja and other temple-specific rites ensuring that every aspect of worship and celebration is observed meticulously.
