The Aarattu Mahotsavam at Kayanna Shri Bhagavathi Temple, Kozhikode is one of the most anticipated religious and cultural festivals in the region attracting devotees and visitors from across Kerala and beyond. Celebrated annually, this festival is a vibrant blend of devotion, tradition and local art forms that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The festivities begin with the ceremonial Pratishtadinam followed by daily poojas and special offerings to Goddess Bhagavathi, the presiding deity of the temple. Each day of the festival is marked by unique rituals including deepaara, Ilaneer Kulavaravu and the grand Thiruvayudham procession, which showcases beautifully adorned idols and traditional ceremonial displays.
Cultural performances form a major highlight of the festival. Devotees can witness mesmerizing Thayambaka and Panchari Melam traditional percussion ensembles that captivate audiences with their rhythmic intensity. The festival also features Musical Nights with renowned bands and local artists, adding a festive and joyous atmosphere to the temple grounds. Another key event is the Pallivetta Panimelam, a symbolic ceremonial hunt accompanied by traditional drumming.
The final days of the festival include the Aarattu ceremony of the deity followed by Sadya for devotees. The temple ensures that morning prasadam is available daily and on the concluding three days, a grand prasadam meal is served to all participants. The festival not only provides spiritual enrichment but also strengthens community bonds preserving centuries-old rituals and promoting local culture.
