Muthappan is revered as the embodiment of two Hindu deities — the Thiruvappan or Valiya Muthapan representing Vishnu, and the Vellatom or Cheriya Muthapan representing Shiva. The sacred site where Muthappan is venerated is known as Madappura.

The annual festival, known as Muthappan Thiruvappana Mahotsavam, is a major celebration featuring Theyyam performances, music, dance, and other cultural events.

Muthappan Theyyam festival
The Muthappan Theyyam festival at Sree Muthappan Temple in Vaanikkanti, Kozhikode, is a vibrant celebration featuring colorful Theyyam performances dedicated to the deity Muthappan. During this festival, devotees witness traditional rituals, music, dance, and offerings to honor Muthappan.
Muthappan Vellattam
There is Thiruvappan - Valiya Muttapan (Vishnu) - called Muthappan; and a second Muthappan, called Vellattam or Cheriya Muthappan (Shiva). The Theyyam for this utilises a round-shaped throne made of hay.
