Tradition holds that the temple was consecrated by Sage Kasyapa, leading the region to be called Kasyapamannu. Over time, this name evolved into Kayanna, as supported by historical research on coastal communities of the early 17th century. Kayanna was once part of Payyormala Nadu, governed by the Payyormala Nairs such as the Paleri, Avaniyatt, and Koothali Nairs. Historical evidence shows that a prosperous Hindu society flourished in this region. The temple itself stands as a living testament to this heritage. It was once under the authority of the Avinhat Moothavar, but over time, the temple’s properties deteriorated, and daily rituals nearly ceased. A group of devoted worshippers later formed a committee to revive the temple, recommencing daily poojas and rebuilding the sanctum along with several structures. In 1985, the committee was expanded with a formal bylaw, leading to extensive renovations including the sacred well, temple tank, Namaskara Mandapam, Chuttambalam, Balikkallu, Balikkalpura, and administrative buildings.

The idol was repaired using Panchaloha a sacred alloy of copper, gold, silver, brass, and iron ensuring the continued divine presence that devotees deeply revere. Sub-deities such as Ganesha, Ayyappa, and Dakshinamoorthy were also consecrated within the temple grounds. After the major renovations, a grand Renovation Kalasam was performed, lasting for fifteen days, granting devotees a rare spiritual blessing believed to transcend generations. Naveekarana Kalasam, considered the most significant ritual of purification and renewal in any temple, was conducted with great devotion. Rare flowers, herbs, precious stones, metals, ghee, grains, and other traditional materials were offered made possible through the wholehearted support of the Kayanna community. The ritual was a resounding spiritual and communal success. Today, countless devotees continue to visit the shrine, chanting the sacred name of Kayanna Sri Bhagavathi Amma and offering their prayers. The timeless grace of the deity continues to bless all who seek her divine presence.
