Thiruvutsavam is one of the most significant annual festivals celebrated at Veroor Sree Dharmashasta Temple located in the serene town of Veroor, Kottayam district, Kerala. The festival marks a period of spiritual devotion, community celebration and the preservation of traditional art forms reflecting the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple culture. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness and participate in these rituals, creating an atmosphere filled with devotion and anticipation. Throughout the festival, the temple premises come alive with Pancharimelam, a traditional percussion ensemble featuring the rhythmic beats of chenda drums and other classical instruments enchanting all who attend.

The Kavadi procession is another highlight where devotees carry beautifully decorated structures as a symbol of penance and devotion to Lord Ayyappa showcasing faith and determination. The festival also features the spectacular Arattu, a ritual bathing ceremony of the deity in holy waters followed by the grand Arattu return procession. Traditional art forms including Chenda Melam – Vayalil Fusion, Kazhchaveeli, and Thekkottezhunnallippu are performed during the festival offering both spiritual and cultural experiences. Children’s cultural programs provide a platform for young talents to showcase their skills in music, dance and drama adding a lively and joyful dimension to the celebrations.
