മലയാളമാസമായ മീനത്തിൽ (മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ) കോട്ടയം വാഴപ്പള്ളി ശ്രീ മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പരമ്പരാഗത ആചാരങ്ങളും സാംസ്കാരിക പരിപാടികളും ചടുലമായ ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന 10 ദിവസത്തെ മഹത്തായ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമാണ് തിരുവുത്സവം.

The idol of the vazhappally temple is centuries old and is considered as the Siva of Neelamperoor temple.The legend is that Chera Raja Pallibana Perummal, a follower of Buddha,
when de-throwned by the "Hindu Bhattas" following a defeat in argument, reached Neelamperoor. The news came to the ears of the potties of pathillams (Chengazhimuttam, Kainikkara, Eravimangalam, Kunnithidasserry,Athrasserry, Kolencherry, Kizhangazhuthu, Kannancherry, Thalavana etc.),that perumal is going to install his personal idol at Neelamperoor. Pathillathil Pottimars ran with the idol Shiva of Neelamperoor and installed that idol at Vazhappally. The ten-day annual Utsavam of Vazhappally Mahadeva Temple is held in the month of Meenam (March-April).

Chathayam. The festival ends with the Arattu (immersion of the deity) on the day of Shiva's star Thiruvathira. This ceremony takes place in the beautiful pond of Morkulangara Bhagavathy Temple nearby. All day different types of ritual ceremonies are performed in the temple . Kadhakali, Oottanthullal, Classical music, Classical dance, Pancharimelom. Elephant procession, Dance Drama, Ganamela, Mimics are some of the Programs.
