The Thiruvutsavam at Thirunakkara Puthiyathakkovil Sree Mahavishnu Temple in Kottayam is one of the most significant and vibrant annual temple festivals in Kerala attracting devotees from across the state and beyond. Spanning eight days, the festival is a harmonious blend of religious rituals, cultural performances and community participation all dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu.
The festival traditionally begins with Kodiyettam, the ceremonial hoisting of the flag symbolizing the commencement of the sacred celebrations. Each day of the festival is filled with structured rituals that include Palliyunarthal, Ganapathi Homam, Ashtabhishekam, Deeparadhana and Narayaneeyam recitations, allowing devotees to immerse themselves in devotional practices.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Pallivetta a symbolic divine hunt which showcases the grandeur of Kerala temple rituals. The festival also features cultural programs such as Thiruvathira, Kathakali, Bharatanatyam, Mayilattam and music ensembles including traditional Panchavadyam and Nadaswaram performances blending art with devotion. Children’s groups and local cultural organizations actively participate presenting folk dances, bhajans and musical shows making the event a community centered celebration.
The festival concludes with the Aarattu, the ceremonial bath of the deity accompanied by a grand procession, Thalappoli and Panchavadyam performances. Devotees eagerly participate in offerings including Mahaprasadam distribution, lighted lamps and special rituals, reinforcing the sense of collective devotion and spiritual engagement. With its combination of sacred traditions, cultural displays and communal involvement, the Thiruvutsavam at Thirunakkara Puthiyathakkovil stands as a remarkable example of Kerala’s rich temple heritage and devotional fervor.
