Shivarathri Mahotsavam at Chirakkadavu Sree Mahadeva Temple is one of the most revered and spiritually enriching festivals celebrated in Kottayam, Kerala. Observed annually in honor of Lord Shiva, this festival attracts thousands of devotees from across the state who come to seek divine blessings and participate in traditional rituals.
The festival begins in the early hours with Palliyunarthal, the ceremonial awakening of the deity followed by Abhishekam and regular poojas performed by the temple priests. Devotees participate in Ganapathi Homam, a sacred fire ritual seeking the removal of obstacles and prosperity. Throughout the day, the temple resonates with the sounds of Nadaswaram and Panchari Melam creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion and festivity.
Evenings are marked by special cultural programs, including Bhajans, Thiruvathira Kali and classical dance performances by renowned art schools showcasing Kerala’s traditional art forms. The festival also includes Deepa Aradhana, where rows of lamps illuminate the temple premises adding a divine glow that mesmerizes devotees and visitors alike.
A significant highlight of the festival is the Kavadi Procession and Rishabhavahana Ulsavam where decorated sacred carriers and ceremonial elephants enhance the grandeur of the celebration.
