The Puna Prathista Dinam & Pongala Mahotsavam at Elamkavu Bhagavathy Temple, Kottayam is one of the most revered and spiritually significant festivals celebrated in Kerala. This festival marks the reinstallation of the deity in the sanctum sanctorum, a ritual that is considered highly auspicious for devotees.
The event draws devotees from across the district and beyond all coming together to participate in the sacred ceremonies and experience the divine atmosphere of the temple.
The festival begins with the traditional lighting of lamps which symbolizes the dispelling of darkness and the arrival of divine energy. Devotees witness intricate rituals performed by the temple priests which include elaborate poojas and homams dedicated to the goddess Bhagavathy.
The highlight of the festival is the Pongala offering, a unique ritual where women devotees cook a special sweet offering made of rice, jaggery and coconut in earthen pots. This offering is made in a designated open space around the temple and is accompanied by chanting of sacred hymns and devotional songs, creating an atmosphere of intense devotion and spiritual fervor.
Alongside the Pongala, the festival features Ashtabhishekam and Kalasam ceremonies which are elaborate rituals performed with sacred oils, water and herbs invoking the divine blessings of the goddess.
