Thiruvutsavam at the Onamthuruth Sree Krishna Swamy Temple is a vibrant and spiritually enriching annual festival that reflects the deep-rooted traditions, devotion and cultural heritage of Kerala temple customs. Celebrated with great reverence, the festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna worshipped here as Onamthuruthappan and draws devotees from nearby regions as well as distant places.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Kodiyettam marking the start of the sacred celebrations. Each day unfolds with a series of traditional rituals such as Abhishekam, Ganapathi Homam, Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja and Sree Bhoothabali performed with strict adherence to temple customs and tantric traditions. These rituals are believed to invoke divine blessings and create a spiritually charged atmosphere within the temple premises.
One of the most captivating aspects of Thiruvutsavam is the grand cultural programs conducted every evening. Classical art forms such as Kathakali, Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Ottan Thullal and Thiruvathira are performed by renowned artists showcasing Kerala’s rich artistic legacy. Traditional percussion ensembles like Panchavadyam, Chenda Melam and Nadaswaram add rhythm and grandeur to the celebrations, enhancing the festive spirit.
Special events like Pallivetta, symbolizing the divine hunt and Arattu, the ceremonial procession and holy bath of the deity, are major highlights that attract large gatherings of devotees. The majestic presence of caparisoned elephants, colorful processions, deepa alankaram and fireworks create a mesmerizing visual spectacle.
The festival also emphasizes community participation with offerings such as Annadanam, Unni Oottu and various poojas sponsored by devotees. The collective involvement of the local community and temple committees ensures that the festival is conducted in a grand and harmonious manner.
