The Navikarana Ashtabandha Kalasam and Sarppa Punaprathishta at Chithirathil Sree Annapoorneswari Temple, Kottayam is one of the most sacred and elaborate temple rituals celebrated in Kerala. This festival holds profound significance for devotees as it involves both the renovation of the temple’s sanctum through Ashtabandha Kalasam and the consecration of the serpent idols invoking the divine presence of the Goddess Annapoorneshwari and associated deities. The ritual symbolizes spiritual rejuvenation and the restoration of divine energy within the temple, ensuring the continuous flow of blessings for devotees and the surrounding community.

During the festival, the temple becomes a center of vibrant devotion and spiritual activity. Devotees participate in a series of homams and special poojas including the Ashta Dravya Mahaganapati Homam, Mrityunjaya Homam and Mahasudarshana Homam each performed to remove obstacles, ensure prosperity and maintain cosmic harmony. The ceremonial installation of the Kalashams marks the sanctification of the temple premises, while the Sarppa Punaprathishta invokes the protective energies of the serpent deities who are revered as guardians of the temple and the devotees’ households. The festival also features Thalappoli processions, a traditional ritual where women devotees offer lamps, flowers and other sacred items while singing devotional songs, creating a visually and spiritually captivating spectacle. The atmosphere is further enhanced with cultural performances, devotional singing and elaborate offerings to the deity. The rituals are conducted under the supervision of the temple Tantri, ensuring strict adherence to traditional Tantric practices while devotees are encouraged to participate actively in various services and offerings.
