Panachikkadu Dakshina Mookambika Temple Kottayam
‘Ithihyamala’ by Kottarathil Sankunni, the Thiruvegappura Temple has a rich history spanning over a thousand years. Traditionally, it has been under the care of three Brahmin families: Kizhupuram, Karunad, and Kaimukku.
A revered Brahmin from Kizhupurathillam, saddened by not having a male heir, once undertook a pilgrimage to the Ganges for a holy bath. On his journey, he stopped at the Mookambika Temple and spent several days in deep prayer to the goddess. One night, the Devi appeared in a vision, advising him to return home. She revealed that a woman from the Karunattillam family was pregnant with twins, and instructed him to adopt one of the children as his own.
Obeying the divine command, the Brahmin bathed, offered worship, and began his journey home. On the way, while passing through Panachikkad, his palm-leaf umbrella suddenly became rigid and unmoving. A holy sage appeared before him, revealing that the umbrella carried the blessing and divine power of Devi Saraswathy. The sage advised him to perform poojas and consecrate the Devi’s power into a temple there.
Nearby, they discovered an old idol once worshipped by a sage with great spiritual power which had been lying abandoned. Since no such spiritually advanced beings existed in the present time, the Brahmin was instructed to install an alternate idol and enshrine the Devi's energy into it. This marked the foundation of the Panachikkadu Saraswathy Temple.
To this day, the traditional rituals and poojas are carried out in the temple with great reverence, following ancestral customs. Worship is offered in a specific order to Mahavishnu, Saraswathy, Ganapathy, Shiva, Sastha, Yakshi, and Nagaraja. Just like the sacred Ganges flows from the feet of Lord Vishnu, in this temple too, holy water flows from Vishnu’s feet to the shrine of Goddess Saraswathy, signifying divine connection and grace.
