The annual Shivaratri celebrations at the revered Kadannakkudi Shiva Temple in Kumaranalloor, Kottayam are observed with deep devotion, traditional rituals, and vibrant cultural expressions, drawing devotees from across the region. This sacred festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is marked by a series of spiritually significant ceremonies that reflect the temple’s age old customs and religious heritage.
The observances span three auspicious days in February 2026, each day beginning with early morning rituals such as Palliyunarthal, Abhishekam and regular poojas creating a serene and devotional atmosphere within the temple premises. Ganapathi Homam is conducted to invoke divine blessings and ensure the smooth conduct of all sacred proceedings. As the days progress, special poojas, Dhara, Shata Kalasha Abhishekam and the highly revered 108 Kalasha Abhishekam are performed symbolizing purification, prosperity and spiritual upliftment for devotees and the temple alike.
Shivaratri day holds special significance, featuring elaborate rituals, Deepa Aradhana, Deepa Kazhcha, Athazha Pooja and extended worship sessions that continue into the night. Devotees participate with utmost faith, offering prayers, lamps and offerings as an expression of gratitude and devotion to Sri Mahadeva. The temple also facilitates offerings such as Nirapara and special vazhipadu enabling devotees to be part of the sacred observances.
Complementing the religious rituals, the festival showcases a rich array of cultural and devotional programs held at the Shivaratri Mandapam. Nama Sankeerthanam, Bhajans, Sopana Sangeetham, Thiruvathira Kali, devotional music ensembles and traditional folk art performances add a vibrant spiritual dimension to the celebrations. Performances by renowned artists, temple based bhajan groups and folk art troupes reflect Kerala’s cultural legacy and enhance the festive spirit.
