Kumba Bharani Mahotsavam at Sree Lakshmana Swami Temple, Kottayam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching temple festivals in Kerala. The celebrations begin with the meticulous Nirmalyam, the ceremonial cleansing of the sanctum followed by Abhishekam, the sacred ritual bathing of the deity with holy waters and offerings. Devotees take part in these early rituals with reverence, offering prayers, flowers and other traditional offerings to seek blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual well-being. Throughout the festival, Kalamezhuthu Pattu, the ancient ritual art form of drawing the deity on the floor with colored powders accompanied by devotional songs is performed with intricate precision invoking divine presence and creating a visually captivating spiritual experience.
In the evenings, the temple comes alive with Deeparadhana, the ceremonial lamp worship and vibrant Thalappoli processions where devotees, particularly women, carry traditional lamps and offerings in a display of devotion and collective celebration. These processions are accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles that enhance the festive atmosphere. Families and local communities actively participate sponsoring rituals and offerings which strengthens communal bonds and preserves centuries old traditions.
