മലയാള മാസമായ കുംഭത്തിൽ (മാർച്ച്-ഏപ്രിൽ) കോട്ടയത്തെ പൊൻകുന്നത്തുകാവ് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പരമ്പരാഗത ആചാരങ്ങളും ചടുലമായ ആഘോഷങ്ങളും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ഒരു മഹത്തായ ഏകദിന വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമാണ് കുംഭ ഭരണി മഹോത്സവം.

Kumbha Bharani Mahotsavam is celebrated annually to pay obeisance to Goddess Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of the temple. Bharani asterism falling in the Malayalam calendar month of Kumbham is the birth star of the Goddess.
The Nattakam Ponkunnathukavu Bhagavathy finds reference in Aytheehyamala which is a collection of century old stories from Kerala that cover a vast spectrum of life,famous persons and events. It is believed that once while a lady was mowing grass, her knife accidently touched a stone nearby. She was surprised to see that the stone was bleeding. It was immediately brought to the notice of the scholars of the region who confirmed the presence of Goddess in the stone. The divine presence was later evoked to a temple near by. The annual festival is believed to please the Goddess and ensure her blessings for the well-being of the community.

This festival commences with the opening of the Holy
Sanctum followed by tantric rituals like Nirmalya
Darshanam and Ganapathy Homam. After that, gingelly
oil and special ghee is poured on the idol of the deity.
Bharani Oottu is one of the main rituals associated with
the festival. It involves serving of food offered to the
Goddess to all devotees who are present for the festival.
Deepa Aaradhana is another ritual performed by lighting
lamps around the temple and circumambulating the
deity. Kumbhakuda Ghoshayatra, a colourful procession
consisting of people carrying coloured pots or kudams
from six areas is the highlight during the evening.
