The Kumbakuda Ghoshayatra at Velluthuruthy Bhagavathy Temple, Kottayam is one of the most awaited and vibrant temple festivals in the region drawing devotees and visitors from across Kerala.
The temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy is considered the guardian deity of the local community and is believed to bless devotees with prosperity, health, and spiritual well-being.
The festival begins with the preparation of the Pattambalam, a specially decorated ceremonial platform where sacred rituals are conducted to invoke the Goddess’s blessings. On the first day, devotees participate in the vehicle procession, where the trident and divine photo of the Goddess are ceremoniously carried from the Pattambalam to designated points in the village, accompanied by traditional Thalappoli and musical ensembles. This procession is a visual spectacle, combining devotional fervor with local artistic traditions.
Throughout the three days, the temple hosts a series of rituals, poojas and cultural programs. These include the Hidumban Pooja, Uru Chuttal, Kudam Pooja and Annadanam which involve both the participation and cooperation of devotees and locals. The festival also features traditional music and percussion performances such as Pambamelam, Thambolam and Karnakalasamiti ensembles adding a vibrant and festive atmosphere to the celebrations.
Devotees take part with great enthusiasm, often observing fasts and preparing offerings in the Goddess’s name. The festival is organized meticulously by the Pappanchira Youth Forum ensuring that all rituals are performed according to tradition while also providing opportunities for devotees to engage with the community and experience the spiritual energy of the temple.
