The Kumbhakuda Ghoshayatra is one of the most vibrant and eagerly awaited festivals celebrated at the Kumaranalloor Devi Temple in Kottayam. Renowned for its grandeur and deep rooted traditions, this festival showcases the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Kerala.
The term “Ghoshayatra” literally refers to a ceremonial procession and in the context of this temple, it is a spectacular display of devotion, music, and community participation. Devotees from all over the region gather in large numbers to witness the procession which begins at the temple premises and moves through the surrounding streets creating a lively and auspicious atmosphere.
The festival is marked by an array of traditional rituals and performances. Ornately decorated elephants, ceremonial umbrellas and musical ensembles form the core of the procession, while priests and devotees chant hymns and perform sacred rituals along the route. Special offerings known as vazhipadu are conducted at various points during the Ghoshayatra allowing devotees to express their gratitude and seek blessings from the goddess.
