Kodungoor Pooram is one of the most celebrated temple festivals in Kottayam held annually at the Kodungoor Devi Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The festival is marked by a series of elaborate rituals and processions that showcase devotion, artistry, and community participation.
The celebrations begin with Kodiyettu, the ceremonial flag hoisting, which signifies the official commencement of the festival. This is followed by a sequence of religious events and cultural programs held throughout the festival period. One of the highlights of the festival is Pallivettu, a symbolic hunting ritual performed to please the goddess and seek her blessings for the well being of the community. The atmosphere during Pallivettu is electrifying with rhythmic drum beats, chants and traditional music filling the temple premises.
Another key event is Kavadiyattam where devotees carry decorated kavadis as a form of penance and devotion often accompanied by energetic performances and traditional music. The festival culminates with Aarattu, the ceremonial holy bath of the deity which is a visually stunning and spiritually significant ritual symbolizing purification and renewal.
