Elampally Utsavam is one of the most significant annual festivals celebrated at the Sree Dharmasastha Temple in Elampally, Kottayam, under the Travancore Devaswom Board. This festival attracts devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion, culture and tradition.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Thrikodiyet marking the official start of the festivities and inviting devotees to partake in the spiritual celebrations. One of the highlights is the Uthram Mahotsavam, a day filled with special poojas, offerings, and elaborate rituals that symbolize the prosperity and protection bestowed by the deity upon the devotees. Another important event is the Pallivetta, a symbolic royal hunt ritual where the deity is taken in a grand procession accompanied by traditional percussion instruments and vibrant performances creating a spectacle that mesmerizes devotees.
The festival concludes with the Aarattu, a sacred ritual performed with great devotion and grandeur. During the entire period of the festival, the temple premises are adorned with colorful decorations, traditional lamps and ceremonial arrangements, creating an atmosphere of divine energy and celebration. Devotees also have the opportunity to participate in daily poojas, offer special prayers, and witness cultural performances like Thayambaka and other classical art forms reflecting the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple festivals.
