Thiru Utsavam & Devaprasna Pariharakriyakal 2026 at Puthukkulangara Balarama – Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, Kottayam is a grand annual festival celebrated with deep devotion and traditional fervor attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
This festival is a vibrant expression of Vaishnavite culture and is dedicated to Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna, the divine siblings revered for their divine play, wisdom and protection of dharma. The temple located in the scenic South Gokulam area of Kumaranalloor becomes a hub of spiritual energy and festive activity during this period.
The festival is marked by a series of meticulously organized rituals and ceremonies designed to enhance the spiritual atmosphere and bring prosperity and harmony to the devotees and the local community. The celebrations begin with Thrikkodiyettam, the ceremonial flag hoisting which signals the official start of the festival and invites devotees to participate in the sacred proceedings. This is followed by various poojas, homams and offerings performed under the guidance of the temple priests ensuring that every ritual is conducted with precision and devotion.
A significant highlight of the festival is the Maha Prasadam Offering where large scale offerings of sanctified food are made to the deities and later distributed among the devotees. This act of sharing and devotion reinforces community bonds and provides a sense of spiritual fulfillment to participants. Another central feature is the Aarattu, the holy bath ritual, where the idols of Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna are taken in a grand procession to the sacred water accompanied by traditional music, percussion ensembles, and enthusiastic participation from devotees. The procession includes elaborate musical performances, bhajans and classical dance presentations creating a mesmerizing blend of devotional art forms.
Throughout the festival, the temple premises are beautifully decorated with flowers, lights and ceremonial ornaments, creating a vibrant and sacred ambience. Devotional singing, classical dances and traditional performances showcase Kerala’s rich cultural heritage and engage the devotees in deep spiritual experiences.
