The Ayiramkudam Abhishekam, Pongala and Kumbhapooram festival at Panamattam Sree Bhagavathi Temple in Kottayam is one of the most significant and vibrant celebrations dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi. This festival draws devotees from across Kerala and beyond offering them a chance to experience the divine presence of the goddess through elaborate rituals, devotional music and cultural festivities.
The temple known for its serene atmosphere and spiritual sanctity becomes a hub of devotion and community gathering during the festival period.
One of the central highlights of this festival is the Ayiramkudam Abhishekam, a grand ritual in which thousands of small pots filled with sanctified water are offered to the deity. Each pot symbolizes the devotee's prayers and devotion and the collective offering creates a mesmerizing spectacle of faith and tradition. The abhishekam is accompanied by special poojas, chanting and the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments creating an atmosphere filled with spiritual energy and devotion.
Alongside the abhishekam, the Pongala offering is another essential ritual where women devotees prepare a sweet rice pudding as an offering to the goddess. The preparation takes place in a festive and communal setting with each devotee meticulously following the traditional steps while singing hymns and devotional songs. The temple provides all necessary materials including firewood, clay pots and ingredients allowing devotees to focus entirely on their prayers and offerings.
The festival also features Kumbhapooram rituals which involve ceremonial processions, lighting of lamps and elaborate decorations around the temple premises. These rituals not only signify prosperity and divine blessings but also strengthen the cultural fabric of the community as devotees come together to celebrate, participate, and share in the devotion. Evenings are marked with deeparadhana, bhajans and cultural performances that showcase Kerala’s rich traditional arts.
