കോട്ടയം ഇത്തിത്താനം ഇളംകാവ് ദേവീക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ആറ്റുവേല മഹോത്സവം മാർച്ചിൽ നടക്കുന്ന 2 ദിവസത്തെ വാർഷിക ഉത്സവമാണ്, വലിയ ജലഘോഷയാത്ര, പരമ്പരാഗത ആചാരങ്ങൾ, സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രകടനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു.

The Attuvela Mahotsavam is a two-day water carnival that takes place in Kottayam district, between March
and April. Held in the Meenam month of the Malayalam calendar, this festival is
focused on Goddess Bhagavathy who is the presiding deity of Elamkavu temple and is believed to be a powerful Goddess of this
region and is worshipped with immense respect. Legend has it that the festival represents the welcome
ceremony accorded to the Goddess of Kodungalloor who arrives to visit her sister, the Goddess of
Elamkavu. The highlight of the two-day festival is a huge replica of the temple sailing down the waterway.
The arresting procession of canoes starts from Attuvela Kadavu, 2 km away from the temple.

The essence of the Attuvela Mahotsavam festival is the
procession of lit up canoes that carry huge temple replicas
sailing down the Moovattupuzha River towards the
Elamkav Bhagavathy Temple. Accompanying the
procession are many small canoes which are beautifully
decorated with vibrant colours complete with percussion
music. Another important ritual during the festivity is the
Garudan Thookkam. The ritual is carried out on small boats
accompanying the procession. In Garudan Thookam, people
who dress up as Garuda (eagle) perform dance and are
hung from a shaft with hooks hooked to their skin.
