Kavadi Mahotsavam is associated with celebrations at the Suryadeva Temple in Adithyapuram dedicated to the Sun God. The divine idol at the temple is installed facing west and regular Abhishekam is done by oil and water. The shrine is the only Sun temple in Kerala. The first and last Sundays of the Malayalam month of Vrischikam and Medam are considered auspicious and special ceremonies and rituals are performed during this period. Legend has it that the idol of Surya Deva was consecrated during the 'Tretayuga'. It is believed that a Namboodiri (Brahmin) who belonged to the 'Kapikkadu Marangattu Mana' performed a deep meditation or 'Tapas' to please the Sun God 'Adithya'. Pleased by his devotion, Adithya appeared before him and instructed him to consecrate an idol in the place. Regular pujas and rituals were started from then on. At present, descendants of the very same Brahmin hold the tantric rights of the temple.

Kavadi Mahotsavam is a 4-day festival conducted during the Malayalam calendar months of Medam and Vrishchikam. Devotees carry different kinds of Kavadi on the final day of the festival as an as an offering to God. This includes Rakthachandana Kavadi which is believed to cure diseases. Other special rituals such as Abhishekam is also conducted during the festival. Hundreds of devotees visit the temple to pray for their well-being and participate in the various holy rituals.
