The presiding deity of the temple is known as Athpudha Narayanan or Amirutha Narayanan, depicted in a standing posture facing the east. Reflecting Kerala-style architecture, the temple features a two-storeyed gopuram or gateway tower, adorned with wooden trails covering the Kottupura, the hall where drum beating occurs during festivals.
According to legend, during their pilgrimage after crowning Parikshit as king, the Pandava princes installed tutelary images of Krishna in various places. Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple was reportedly established by Sahadeva among them.
