This temple holds a significant place in Kerala’s social history. It was the first temple in the state to open its doors to all Hindus, regardless of caste, even before the famous Temple Entry Proclamation by Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma.
ശ്രീ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യസ്വാമി ക്ഷേത്രം പെരുന്ന കോട്ടയം | Sree Subramanya Swami Temple Perunna Kottayam
Inspired by this progressive act led by Mannathu Padmanabhan, Mahatma Gandhi visited the temple during his first trip to Kerala and offered prayers to Lord Muruga. A large gathering and ceremony were held at the temple’s east entrance to commemorate this event.
The temple worships a fierce form of Subrahmanya Swami, depicted with his Vel pointing downward. Here, the deity is honored as Devasenapathi, the commander of the celestial forces, in a state of anger after slaying the demon Tarakasura. This east-facing idol is unique in Kerala for its intense and powerful expression. Other deities include Mahaganapathi, Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, and serpent gods. Tuesdays are particularly important, and rituals are performed by Namboothiri priests. The temple’s major festival falls between December and January.

Ancient inscriptions written in the Vattezhuthu script can be found on the temple’s west gate. These are believed to date back to the 10th century during the reign of the Kulasekhara dynasty. Perunna remains a spiritually significant region enriched with numerous temples and deep-rooted traditions.
