Kalamezhuthum Pattum
Kalamezhuthu and Sarppam Pattu are traditional ritualistic practices in Kerala serpent temples. Kalamezhuthu involves drawing intricate patterns with rice flour and natural pigments to invoke serpent deities' blessings, typically performed during special temple festivals and rituals. Sarppam Pattu, on the other hand, entails singing hymns and songs dedicated to serpent deities for protection and prosperity, accompanied by traditional instruments like chenda and ilathalam, during serpent temple festivals and rituals.
Ayilyam pooja
Ayilyam pooja is a significant ritual observed in certain serpent temples in Kerala, often dedicated to Nagaraja (the serpent god) and Nagayakshiyamma. During the Ayilyam star (Ayilyam Nakshatra), which occurs once in every lunar month, special poojas and rituals are conducted to appease the serpent deities and seek their blessings. Devotees believe that performing poojas on Ayilyam star days can ward off malefic effects associated with serpent afflictions and bring prosperity and well-being.
