The main deity is a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam, discovered under a sacred Bilva tree, and the temple is said to have origins dating back to the time of the Alwars.

The temple follows a rich daily ritual tradition with five poojas, three Seeveli processions, and the daily Navakam ritual.

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Ayyappan Pattu
Ayyappa devotees regard Chirakkadavu Sri Mahadeva as the father of Lord Ayyappan, making the temple a significant stop for pilgrims. Every year on Dhanu 24th, devotees on their way to Sabarimala gather at the temple to perform the traditional Ayyappan Pattu as part of their pilgrimage. This practice has been faithfully followed for generations.
Thiru Ulsavam
Thiru Ulsavam at Chirakkadavu Mahadeva Temple is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram with great devotion. The festival includes Thrikkodiyettu, Pallivetta, Arattu, and various special poojas. Devotees from different regions participate in the festivities with great spiritual fervor.
