The Maharathotsava at Sri Mookambika Devi Temple, Kollur is one of the most celebrated and spiritually significant festivals in the coastal region of Karnataka. Attracting thousands of devotees from across India, this grand festival honors Goddess Mookambika, the revered deity of knowledge, wisdom and prosperity.
The festival is marked by a series of sacred rituals, traditional ceremonies and vibrant cultural events that showcase the rich heritage of the region.
The celebrations commence with preliminary rituals including the Ganapathi Prarthane, Nandi Punyaha and Ankuradhivasa which set the auspicious tone for the festival. The temple is beautifully adorned and special prayers are performed to invoke the blessings of the goddess. Devotees participate in Muhurthabali, Bherithadana, and Kauthuka Bandhana symbolizing prosperity and protection for the community. The festival also features unique temple processions including the Nagarotsava where traditional temple elephants and decorated chariots accompany the rituals creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
The highlight of the festival is the Ratharohana where the idol of Goddess Mookambika is placed on a grand chariot and pulled through the temple streets by devotees. This event is considered highly auspicious allowing devotees to witness the goddess up close and receive her divine blessings. Other rituals such as Dolarohanotsava, Mayurarohanotsava, Ashwarohanotsava and Simharohanotsava further enrich the spiritual experience with elaborate decorations, music and chants creating a divine ambiance.
In addition to the religious aspects, the Maharathotsava is a vibrant cultural celebration. Traditional music, dance performances and local art forms are showcased, reflecting the rich cultural heritage associated with the temple.
