The Kumbha Thiruvathira Mahotsavam at Valiyaveedu Devi Temple, Kollam is one of the most cherished and spiritually vibrant festivals in the region attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This annual celebration is dedicated to the divine ladies of the temple who embody Shakti and are revered for their grace, strength and benevolence.
The festival offers a unique opportunity for devotees to witness traditional rituals participate in devotional offerings and immerse themselves in the cultural richness of Kerala’s temple heritage.
The festival begins with the sacred Nirmalya Darshanam where devotees view the previous day’s offerings to the Goddess followed by the Elaneer Abhishekam, a ritual involving coconut water that symbolizes purity and devotion. The mornings are marked by the Ashta Dravya Maha Ganapathi Homam, a grand fire ritual invoking divine blessings using eight sacred substances and the Bhagavatam Parayanam which brings the stories of the Goddess to life through recitation and chanting.
Devotees participate in these rituals with immense devotion, offering their prayers, special nerchas and contributions to the temple.
The evenings feature Deepa Aradhana and circumambulation with lamps creating a mesmerizing spectacle as the temple is illuminated in devotion and festivity. Community offerings such as Pongala where women devotees prepare sacred rice offerings highlight the participatory nature of the celebration. The festival also includes cultural elements like devotional music, bhajans and processions that wind through the temple and surrounding areas accompanied by traditional percussion instruments and chants filling the air with a sense of spiritual energy and communal harmony.
