Thrikodiyettu Mahotsavam at Thrikkoyikkal Sri Mahavishnu Mahadevar Temple, Kollam is one of the most revered and vibrant annual festivals in Kerala, celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. This festival held at the historic Thrikkoyikkal Sri Mahavishnu Mahadevar Temple, brings together devotees from across the region offering them an opportunity to experience the spiritual and cultural richness of Kerala’s temple traditions.
The festival is marked by the ceremonial hoisting of the temple flag known as Thrikodiyettu which signifies the formal commencement of the festivities. Under the guidance of the temple’s chief priest, a series of rituals are performed with meticulous attention to traditional practices including Abhishekam, Nirmalyam and Ganapathi Homam ensuring the blessings of the deity are invoked for all devotees.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Pallivetta, a symbolic ceremonial hunt which reflects ancient temple customs and the triumph of good over evil. This is followed by Thiruarattu, a sacred holy bath of the deity in the temple tank symbolizing purification and divine grace. Throughout the festival, the temple is adorned with elaborate floral decorations, oil lamps and colorful ornaments creating a mesmerizing spiritual ambiance.
Cultural performances such as Sopana Sangeetham, traditional dance forms and folk music programs form an integral part of the festival showcasing the rich heritage of Kerala. The festival also emphasizes community participation with devotees contributing through offerings, sponsorships and volunteering in organizing the various rituals and events. Special feasts known as Annadanam are arranged for devotees reflecting the temple’s commitment to charity and service.
