Thrikkarthika Mahotsavam at Peroor Karunalloor Bhagavathy Temple in Kollam is one of the most revered and culturally rich festivals in the region attracting devotees and art enthusiasts from across Kerala. Celebrated annually, this festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy and is observed with great devotion, traditional rituals and elaborate cultural programs.
It usually spans ten days, providing a spiritual retreat and a chance for devotees to offer their prayers and seek the blessings of the deity.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Palliyunarthal which marks the formal awakening of the deity followed by Nirmalya Darshan allowing devotees to have an early morning darshan of the adorned goddess.
One of the most significant rituals of the festival is the Kunkumabhishekam where the deity is adorned with sacred kumkum and offered floral decorations symbolizing purity and prosperity. The days are filled with various homams such as Ganapathi Homam and Mrityunjaya Homam, performed to invoke divine protection, remove obstacles and bring good health and peace to the devotees.
Throughout the festival, devotional music and Sopanam performances enrich the spiritual atmosphere accompanied by Bhagavatha Parayanam which narrates stories from the Puranas emphasizing moral values and devotion. Each day also features Ushapooja and Uchcha Pooja offering elaborate worship to the goddess. Special offerings such as Annadanam feeding hundreds of devotees highlight the spirit of community and generosity, making the festival not only a religious but also a social event.
Cultural programs such as traditional folk music, dance performances and Kathakali are conducted in the evenings showcasing Kerala’s rich artistic heritage. Devotees also participate in processions carrying Thalappoli and Floral Lamps creating a visually stunning spectacle. The festival culminates with Deeparadhana and grand concluding rituals leaving a lasting impression of divine bliss and community spirit.
