The Thaipooyam Mahotsavam 2026 at Thekkedathu Sree Bhagavathy Temple, Kollam is one of the most anticipated religious and cultural events in the region, celebrated with great devotion and grandeur.
The festival begins with the ceremonial awakening of the deity followed by the offering of sacred items and traditional rituals that invoke the blessings of the goddess. Devotees participate in Usha Pooja, Usha Shiveli and the Mahaganapathi Homam marking the start of a spiritually enriching series of observances.
A central feature of the festival is the Thaipooya Pongala where hundreds of women devotees gather to prepare the sacred offering in earthen pots signifying devotion and gratitude to the goddess. Alongside this, the temple hosts Thottampattu, a traditional ritualistic music and storytelling performance dedicated to the deity which captures the essence of Kerala’s devotional art forms. The festival also features Kavadi processions where devotees carry ornately decorated structures on their shoulders in a symbolic act of devotion, accompanied by rhythmic drum beats, Chenda Melam and other traditional instruments.
Special poojas such as Bhagavathi Seva, Kuruthi Pooja and Shribhuthabali are performed under the guidance of the temple Tantri ensuring that the rituals follow the sacred Tantric traditions. Each day includes Kalasha Pooja, Ucha Pooja,and Athazha Shiveli with offerings of Pongala and other prasadam distributed to the devotees. Cultural programs like classical music, Kavadi arts and devotional recitations enhance the festive spirit making it an experience that blends devotion with Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
