The Shivarathri Mahotsavam & Thiruvathira Competition 2026 at Thrikoyikkal Sree Mahavishnu Mahadevar Temple in Perumbuzha, Kollam, is one of the most anticipated religious and cultural celebrations in the region. This grand festival brings together devotees, performers and visitors from across Kerala to partake in a series of spiritual, devotional and artistic events.
Traditionally observed to honor Lord Shiva, the festival combines rigorous religious rituals with vibrant cultural performances making it a unique and immersive experience for everyone involved.
The day begins in the early morning with Nirmalyam, Abhishekam and Ganapathi Homam followed by Ushah Pooja marking the start of an auspicious day of worship. Devotees can participate in these rituals and offer items such as milk, honey, ghee, tender coconut and oil to the deity. From morning till noon, the temple conducts Bhagavatha Parayanam, a devotional recitation of sacred texts performed by local scholars and musicians. The recitation sessions are accompanied by offerings from families of the region, symbolizing devotion and community spirit.
The festival also features a community meal which allows devotees to share in a traditional Kerala feast reinforcing the bonds of unity and fellowship. In the evening, the Shiva Deepam ceremony illuminates the temple premises with rows of oil lamps creating a serene and divine ambiance. The Deeparadhana and Chandranamaskaram are performed followed by the highly anticipated Thiruvathira competition, where teams display their traditional dance skills in front of an enthusiastic audience. Prizes and trophies are awarded to the top performers recognizing their dedication and artistry.
The night concludes with Kalasha Pooja, Kalasha Abhishekam and Shivapurana Parayanam which are conducted with deep devotion and grandeur.
