Utsavam at Puttingal Devi Temple in Kollam is one of the most spiritually vibrant and culturally rich celebrations in the region. Celebrated with deep devotion at Paravur Puttingal Ammumma Kavu, the festival reflects centuries old traditions rooted in Kerala’s sacred grove (kavu) worship system.
The temple is dedicated to Puttingal Bhagavathy revered as a powerful manifestation of Goddess Bhadrakali, and the annual utsavam is considered a highly auspicious occasion for devotees seeking blessings, protection and prosperity.
The festival begins with traditional rituals that awaken the sacred energy of the kavu followed by elaborate poojas performed according to ancestral customs. The temple premises transform into a devotional hub filled with the sounds of chenda melam, devotional chants, and the rhythmic beats of traditional instruments.
One of the most significant rituals during the utsavam is Pongala where women devotees prepare offerings in earthen pots as an act of gratitude and prayer to the Goddess. Annadanam is also conducted symbolizing equality, compassion and the spirit of sharing.
Cultural performances form an integral part of the celebration. Traditional art forms such as Kaikottikali and Kambadikalli add color and energy to the festival atmosphere. Devotional recitations, bhajans and special parayanams are conducted enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the temple. The sacred Deeparadhana ceremony performed with rows of illuminated lamps creates a mesmerizing and divine experience for devotees.
