The sacred Puthiyakavu Pongala celebrated at Sree Puthiyakavu Bhagavathy Temple is one of the most important devotional gatherings in the city of Kollam. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of the temple, this ritual is a powerful expression of faith, devotion and community participation.
Every year thousands of women devotees gather around the temple premises and nearby streets to offer the sacred Pongala, a traditional offering prepared in earthen pots as a mark of devotion to the Goddess.
Pongala is a deeply spiritual ritual in which devotees cook a special offering made of rice, jaggery, coconut and other traditional ingredients. The preparation is done on temporary brick stoves arranged across temple grounds and surrounding areas. As the sacred fire is lit and the rice begins to boil, devotees chant prayers and hymns seeking the blessings of the divine mother.
