The annual Thiruvutsavam at Pathirikkal Sree Dharma Shastha Temple is one of the most sacred and culturally vibrant temple festivals in the region drawing devotees from Kollam district and nearby areas. Dedicated to Lord Dharma Shastha, the festival is observed with deep devotion, strict adherence to traditional rituals and a rich blend of spiritual and cultural expressions that reflect Kerala’s temple heritage.
The festival spans several days and begins with auspicious ceremonies such as Prabhatha Bheri, Palli Unarthal, Ganapathi Homam, Abhishekam, and Bhagavatha Parayanam setting a spiritually charged atmosphere from the early hours of each day. Each ritual is performed according to age-old Vedic and Tantric traditions under the guidance of learned Thantris and priests, ensuring the sanctity and continuity of temple customs. Special poojas, Usha Pooja, Deeparadhana and Athazha Pooja form the daily spiritual rhythm of the festival.
One of the most significant highlights is the Utsavabali, a grand ceremonial offering intended to please the divine attendants of the Lord and enhance the spiritual energy of the temple. This ritual accompanied by traditional percussion instruments and sacred chants, is considered a rare and powerful occasion for devotees to receive divine blessings. Pallivetta, symbolizing the victory of good over evil is another major ritual that attracts large gatherings followed by majestic processions with Panchavadyam, Nadaswaram and decorated elephants.
The festival concludes with the sacred Aarattu, the holy ceremonial bath of the deity conducted at the temple pond. The Aarattu procession, accompanied by traditional music, ornamental umbrellas and torches is a visually captivating and spiritually uplifting experience. Alongside rituals, the festival also features devotional music, bhajans, classical dance, folk performances, Kathakali, spiritual discourses and cultural programmes making it a holistic celebration of faith and art.
