The annual festival at Kodimoottil Sri Bhadrakaali Temple in Parippally is one of the most spectacular religious and cultural events in Kerala. This vibrant celebration attracts devotees and tourists from all over the state and beyond drawn by the temple’s deep rooted traditions and the grandeur of its rituals.
The festival spans several days culminating in the much awaited elephant pageant which is the highlight of the event.
Devotees gather in large numbers to witness the majestic procession of elephants, each adorned with ornate golden ornaments, silk umbrellas and traditional decorative fans. The elephants numbering between fifty and one hundred, move gracefully in synchrony creating a breathtaking spectacle. The rhythmic beats of temple percussion ensembles like Panchavadyam and Chenda Melam provide an electrifying soundtrack blending devotion with cultural artistry.
In addition to the elephant procession, the festival features a series of religious rituals and offerings to the deity reflecting centuries old customs. Women actively participate in Thalappoli processions carrying traditional lamps on beautifully decorated platters adding to the spiritual ambiance. Devotees also perform Nercha offerings often donating elephants or other votive gifts to fulfill prayers and seek blessings.
Cultural programs run alongside the religious ceremonies, including classical music, traditional dance forms and folk performances highlighting Kerala’s rich heritage.
