Thrikkodiyettu Mahotsavam at Pangodu Sree Krishna Swami Temple, Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually uplifting temple festivals in Kerala. Celebrated with deep devotion and grandeur, this festival honors Lord Krishna, the presiding deity of the temple who is revered as the protector, guide and eternal source of wisdom and joy for devotees.
The festival is marked by a series of traditional rituals, devotional practices and cultural performances that showcase the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple traditions.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Thrikkodiyettu symbolizing the commencement of the auspicious period. From that moment, the temple premises are filled with continuous Harinam Keerthanam, Bhagavatha Parayanam and offerings by devotees creating an atmosphere of spiritual energy and divine blessings. Throughout the festival, Vedic rituals are performed by the chief priests accompanied by sacred music, traditional instruments and ceremonial offerings such as Shree Bhoothabali which invoke protection and prosperity for all participants.
A significant highlight of the Mahotsavam is the Pongala offering where devotees gather to prepare a special sweet rice offering for the deity symbolizing selfless devotion and gratitude. Alongside these religious practices, the festival features a wide array of cultural programs including classical dance performances, devotional dramas, nadaswaram concerts and storytelling sessions that depict the life and teachings of Lord Krishna making it a holistic celebration of art, culture and spirituality.
The festival concludes with the Aarattu procession and flag lowering accompanied by traditional music and chants signifying the completion of the sacred celebrations and offering final prayers for peace, prosperity and spiritual upliftment.
