Maha Shivaratri Mahotsavam 2026 at Panayil Devi Temple, Kottathala, in Kollam district is one of the most spiritually vibrant annual celebrations of the temple drawing devotees from nearby villages and across Kerala. Each day begins in the early hours with Palliyunarthal followed by Nirmalyam, Harinamakeerthanam, Ganapathi Homam and Bhagavata Parayanam. These rituals create a deeply spiritual atmosphere allowing devotees to immerse themselves in prayer, chanting and offerings. Special poojas dedicated to Lord Shiva including Shiva Panchakshari chanting and Yamapooja, are conducted with strict adherence to tantric and Vedic traditions under the guidance of the temple’s chief priest.

One of the major highlights of the celebration is Thottampattu, a traditional ritual art form narrating the divine stories of the Goddess. Pongala Mahotsavam another important event sees women devotees offering sweet rice to the Goddess as a symbol of gratitude and prayer for prosperity and well being.
