Mulamkadathamma Pongala is one of the most important and spiritually significant rituals conducted at Sri Mulamkadakam Devi Temple. The temple is a revered place of worship dedicated to Goddess Mulamkadathamma, a powerful manifestation of the Divine Mother who is worshipped by thousands of devotees from Kollam and nearby regions.
The Pongala festival is a sacred offering performed mainly by women devotees as an expression of deep devotion, gratitude, and prayer for prosperity, health, and protection.
During the Mulamkadathamma Pongala, devotees prepare a special offering made from rice, jaggery, coconut and ghee in earthen pots. This ritual is traditionally performed in open spaces around the temple premises. Devotees light small hearths using bricks and firewood and cook the offering while chanting prayers and invoking the blessings of the goddess. The moment when the Pongala boils over is considered highly auspicious symbolizing abundance, fulfillment of wishes and the divine grace of the goddess.
The temple surroundings transform into a vibrant and devotional atmosphere during the festival. Thousands of devotees gather early in the morning to participate in the ritual filling the temple streets and nearby areas with rows of clay pots placed on temporary hearths. The fragrance of the sacred offering, the sound of devotional chants and the rhythmic temple rituals create a deeply spiritual environment that reflects the rich cultural and religious traditions of Kerala.
Priests of the temple perform special poojas and ceremonies seeking the blessings of the deity for the devotees and the community. After the ritual is completed, the Pongala offering is dedicated to the goddess and later taken home by devotees as prasadam which is believed to bring divine blessings and protection.
