The Meda-Makayira-Thiruvathira Mahotsavam at Thrikkaruva Vettathukavu Sree Sivaparvathy Temple in Kollam is one of the most revered and vibrant festivals in Kerala celebrated with deep devotion and traditional grandeur.
This festival honors the divine presence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy bringing together devotees from all over the region to partake in a series of sacred rituals, cultural programs and communal offerings. The temple nestled amidst serene surroundings becomes a hub of spiritual energy and cultural vibrancy during the Mahotsavam, drawing people of all ages and backgrounds.
The celebrations are marked by early morning rituals such as Palliyunarthal, Abhishekam, Ganapathi Homam, and Ushah Pooja, invoking blessings for prosperity, health and spiritual well being. Devotees witness and participate in Bhagavatha Parayanam, Narayaneeya Parayanam and Bhagavatha storytelling which fill the temple premises with sacred chants and devotional melodies. A unique feature of this festival is the Pulluvan songs, traditional serpent worship music which adds a mystical and ancestral dimension to the rituals.
The festival also emphasizes community participation through Annadanam, Poomoodal and Deepaaradhana allowing devotees to engage in acts of service and devotion. In the evenings, the temple hosts Sopan Sangeetham, Thiruvathira and Kaikottikali dance performances and musical concerts showcasing Kerala’s rich cultural heritage.
Another highlight is the Saubhagya Deepa Pradakshina Vilakku, a special lamp procession where devotees walk around the temple with oil lamps, seeking divine blessings and spiritual fulfillment. This tradition has inspired generations of devotees to maintain faith experience spiritual growth and build a strong sense of community.
