Rohini Mahotsavam is one of the most significant and vibrant festivals celebrated at the Mangad Machath Sri Bhadradevi Subrahmanya Swami Temple in Kollam.The festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Bhadradevi and Lord Subrahmanya along with other deities and is observed with great devotion and enthusiasm by the local community and temple patrons.
The celebrations commence early in the morning with the traditional flag hoisting ceremony marking the beginning of the auspicious days. Daily rituals include Sarvabhishekam where the deities are ceremoniously bathed with holy substances followed by offerings of clothes, garlands and sacred items. Devotional chanting including Akhandanama Japa Yajnam, Bhagavata Parayanam and Sahasranama Parayanam, enriches the spiritual atmosphere creating a serene and divine environment for devotees.
An important highlight of the festival is the Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homa, a sacred fire ritual performed to invoke Lord Ganesha’s blessings for prosperity and removal of obstacles. The festival also features traditional Kerala art forms and cultural programs including Kaikotti Kali, Thiruvathira Kali and Sopanam music performances showcasing the rich heritage of the region. Community meals including Samooh Sadya and evening feasts are organized daily fostering a sense of togetherness and devotion among attendees.
Evening rituals include Deepa Aradhana, Pushpabhishekam and distribution of prasadam along with spectacular fireworks on the final day making the festival visually and spiritually captivating. Rohini Mahotsavam not only serves as a religious observance but also as a cultural gathering that strengthens community bonds and preserves traditional temple practices.
