Malakkuda Mahotsavam at Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Duryodhana Temple, Kollam is one of the most vibrant and culturally significant temple festivals in Kerala. This festival is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Malanad region and reflects the rich heritage of the Dravidian temple rituals.
The temple itself, dedicated to the deity Duryodhana Maharaja is unique in its worship practices allowing devotees from all communities to participate freely symbolizing inclusivity and the spiritual essence of the festival.
The festival is renowned for its grand Malakkuda procession in which beautifully decorated ceremonial umbrellas are carried in a spectacular display across the temple premises. The highlight of the festival is the kettukazhcha, a striking visual feast where hundreds of effigies including large bulls, horses and smaller artistic structures are arranged meticulously by local communities. Each effigy is a work of art, showcasing traditional craftsmanship, vibrant colors and devotion making it one of the most anticipated events of the temple calendar.
Ritual worship forms the spiritual backbone of the festival. The temple hosts elaborate poojas, evening Sandhya Seva, and Thookkam ceremonies, which are believed to remove sorrows and fulfill the wishes of devotees. Devotees also offer agricultural products such as toddy, sugarcane, poultry and cattle as part of the traditional offerings connecting the festival to the agrarian culture of the region.
Apart from the religious and ritualistic aspects, the Malakkuda Mahotsavam is a hub for cultural programs including classical dances like Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, traditional music performances and folk art displays. These programs, performed by skilled artists add vibrancy and grandeur to the celebrations.
