The Makaram Thiruvathira Mahotsavam is one of the most significant and vibrant festivals celebrated at Neendakara Kannattukudi Sree Devi Temple in Kollam. This annual festival attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond all eager to witness and participate in the rich rituals and cultural traditions associated with the temple.
The festival usually spans ten days, beginning in the Malayalam month of Makaram a period considered highly auspicious for seeking the blessings of the Goddess.
The festivities commence with the ceremonial opening of the temple followed by various special poojas and abhishekams performed by the temple priests. Devotional chanting, Harinam keertanam and Ganapathi Homam mark the early hours of each day creating a spiritual atmosphere that immerses all visitors in devotion. One of the highlights of the festival is the Thiruvathira dance performed by groups of women devotees which showcases traditional Kerala art forms and offers a cultural tribute to the Goddess.
Another major feature is the procession of the deity often accompanied by Panchavadyam, chenda melam and other traditional musical ensembles. Devotees also participate in rituals such as Thangka Anki Charthi, Deepa Aradhana and various offerings to seek prosperity, well being and protection from hardships. The temple premises are decorated elaborately with floral arrangements, lamps and colorful adornments enhancing the festive mood.
Communal meals are arranged for devotees reflecting the spirit of generosity and community bonding. Cultural programs including Sopana Sangeetham, vocal and instrumental music performances and traditional plays further enrich the festival experience. The final day of the Mahotsavam concludes with the Thrikkodiyet, Aarattu and ceremonial rituals bringing the festival to a grand and auspicious close.
