Makara Bharani Mahotsavam is one of the most important annual festivals celebrated at Choncheril Sree Bhadra Bhagavathi Moorthy Temple, Kollam and it holds deep spiritual, cultural and traditional significance for devotees from Adinad North and surrounding regions.  Makara Bharani Mahotsavam 2026 at Choncheril Sree Bhadra Bhagavathi Moorthy Temple Kollam Kerala Dedicated to Goddess Bhadra Bhagavathi, the festival is observed with strict adherence to age old temple customs, rituals and tantric traditions making it a spiritually uplifting experience for all participants. The ten day festival is conducted during the auspicious Malayalam month of Makaram centering around the Bharani star which is considered highly sacred for the worship of the Goddess. Each day begins in the early morning with temple opening, Nirmalya Darshanam and Harinama Keerthanam followed by Ganapathi Homam and Usha Pooja. Devi Bhagavatha Parayanam is performed daily creating a devotional atmosphere filled with sacred chants and hymns praising the Goddess.

One of the major highlights of the festival is Aswathi Pongala where devotees prepare offerings as an expression of faith and gratitude. Rituals such as Thottam Pattu, Kalamezhuthu and Pattu, Guruthi, Navakam, and Kalasha Abhishekam reflect the rich ritualistic heritage of Kerala’s Bhagavathi temples. These ceremonies are believed to invoke the powerful and benevolent presence of the Goddess, bestowing prosperity, protection and spiritual well-being upon devotees. The festival also features Ethirelppu, a grand traditional reception procession along with Thirukalyanam symbolizing the divine marriage of the Goddess. Cultural and devotional programs, including Sopana Sangeetham, folk song performances, devotional music concerts,and classical dance presentations add artistic vibrancy to the celebrations while preserving Kerala’s traditional art forms. Annadanam and Kanji Sadya are offered on selected days, reinforcing the temple’s spirit of service and community harmony. The festival concludes with deeply sacred rituals performed on the final day marking the fulfillment of vows and prayers offered by devotees.
