The Maha Shivarathri Mahotsavam 2026 at Ashramam Sri Muneeswara Swami Temple in Kollam is one of the most significant and spiritually uplifting celebrations for devotees of Lord Shiva in Kerala.
Devotees from Kollam and neighboring regions gather in large numbers to participate in the rituals, poojas and cultural programs that form the essence of this auspicious occasion.
The festival begins in the early hours of the morning with the temple opening and the offering of Nirmalyam followed by Abhishekam and Dhara to the deity. Special homams including Ganapathi Homam and Mrityunjaya Homam are conducted to invoke divine blessings for health, prosperity and protection from negativity. The Usha Pooja and the lighting of Bhadra Deepam signify the triumph of light over darkness and create a serene and devotional atmosphere within the temple premises. Devotional recitations such as Bhagavatam Parayanam are also organized to inspire spiritual reflection and devotion among the attendees.
The day continues with Uchappooja and Annadanam offering food to hundreds of devotees emphasizing the values of generosity and service. In the evening, the temple reopens for Deeparadhana, Athazha Pooja and the vibrant Thiruvathirakali performances showcasing traditional art forms as an offering to the deity. The night is marked by the Akhanda Nama Japam, a continuous chanting of Lord Shiva’s name, and Yama Poojas that extend till early morning, symbolizing devotion, perseverance and the spiritual significance of staying awake on this holy night.
